How to Play KeyForge: A Beginner's Guide to the Unique Deck Game

Welcome to KeyForge - The Game Where Every Deck is Unique!

KeyForge is unlike any other card game you've played. Created by legendary designer Richard Garfield (the mind behind Magic: The Gathering), KeyForge revolutionizes card gaming with a simple but brilliant concept: every single deck is completely unique and comes ready to play. No deck building, no rare hunting—just grab a deck and start playing!

Ready to unlock the Crucible? Let's learn how to play KeyForge!

What Makes KeyForge Different?

Before we dive into the rules, here's what sets KeyForge apart:

  • No Deck Building Required: Each deck is procedurally generated and completely unique with its own name
  • No Rarity System: Every card in your deck is equally important to your strategy
  • Ready to Play: Open a deck and you're ready to battle immediately
  • Balanced Gameplay: Since you can't customize decks, skill matters more than collection size
  • Three Houses Per Deck: Each deck contains cards from exactly three of KeyForge's unique houses (factions)

The Goal of KeyForge

Your objective is simple: Be the first player to forge 3 keys. To forge a key, you need to collect 6 Æmber (the game's resource). The first player to forge their third key wins the game!

What You Need to Play

  • 2 KeyForge decks (one for each player)
  • Æmber tokens (usually 20-30 per player)
  • Damage tokens or counters
  • Key tokens (3 per player in different colors)
  • Chain tracker (optional, for advanced play)

Setting Up the Game

Step 1: Each player takes their KeyForge deck and shuffles it thoroughly.

Step 2: Draw a starting hand of 7 cards.

Step 3: Each player may mulligan once (shuffle your hand back and draw 6 cards instead).

Step 4: Randomly determine who goes first.

Step 5: Place your three key tokens in front of you, unforged side up.

You're ready to play!

How to Play: Turn Structure

Each turn follows five simple steps:

Step 1: Forge a Key (if you can)

If you have 6 or more Æmber at the start of your turn, you must forge a key. Pay 6 Æmber, flip one of your key tokens to the forged side, and continue your turn.

Step 2: Choose a House

Look at the cards in your hand and on the battlefield. Choose one of the three houses represented and announce it. This turn, you can only play and use cards from that house.

This is KeyForge's most unique mechanic—you must commit to one house per turn, creating interesting strategic decisions!

Step 3: Play, Discard, and Use Cards

In any order you choose, you may:

Play Cards: Play as many cards from your chosen house as you want from your hand.

  • Creatures: Enter play ready (can be used immediately next turn)
  • Artifacts: Permanent cards that provide ongoing effects
  • Upgrades: Attach to creatures to enhance them
  • Actions: One-time effects that go to your discard pile after use

Use Creatures: Each ready creature from your chosen house can do ONE of the following:

  • Reap: Gain 1 Æmber and exhaust the creature (turn it sideways)
  • Fight: Attack an enemy creature, both deal damage to each other, exhaust your creature
  • Action Ability: Use the creature's special ability (if it has one marked with "Action:")

Discard Cards: You may discard any number of cards from your chosen house.

Step 4: Ready Cards

Turn all your exhausted (sideways) cards back to the ready position.

Step 5: Draw Cards

Draw cards until you have 6 cards in hand. If you already have 6 or more, you don't draw any cards.

That's it! Your turn is over, and your opponent takes their turn.

Key Concepts and Strategies

Æmber Management

Æmber is everything in KeyForge. You gain it primarily by:

  • Reaping with creatures (+1 Æmber each)
  • Playing cards with Æmber bonuses (shown as yellow icons)
  • Card abilities that generate or steal Æmber

Pro Tip: Sometimes it's better to fight and remove threats than to reap for Æmber. Don't let your opponent build an unstoppable board!

Board Control

Creatures are your primary way to generate Æmber, but they're also your defense. Key strategies include:

  • Taunt creatures: Must be fought before other creatures
  • Elusive creatures: Can't be attacked unless they're the only creature
  • Armor: Prevents damage
  • Creature positioning: Flank creatures (leftmost and rightmost) can be attacked by any enemy creature

Æmber Control

Don't just focus on gaining Æmber—control your opponent's too!

  • Steal effects: Take Æmber from your opponent
  • Capture effects: Lock opponent's Æmber on your creatures (they can get it back by destroying that creature)
  • Destroy effects: Make opponent lose Æmber permanently

House Selection Strategy

Choosing which house to activate each turn is crucial:

  • Need Æmber? Choose the house with the most reap-ready creatures
  • Opponent building a threat? Choose your house with removal or fighting creatures
  • Have a powerful combo? Choose the house that can execute it

Common Beginner Mistakes

Reaping too much: Don't ignore your opponent's board. Sometimes you need to fight!

Forging too early: You must forge if you have 6+ Æmber at turn start. Plan ahead!

Ignoring card draw: Running out of cards means fewer options. Manage your hand size.

Playing everything: Sometimes holding cards for a better turn is smarter.

Forgetting exhausted creatures: Creatures played this turn can't be used until next turn.

Advanced Tips

Count Æmber potential: Always know how much Æmber you can generate next turn

Deny key forges: If your opponent has 6+ Æmber, steal or capture it before their turn!

Archive strategically: Some cards let you archive (set aside) cards for later—use this to save powerful combos

Learn your deck: Each KeyForge deck has unique synergies. Play it multiple times to discover them!

Watch for chains: In tournament play, stronger decks get "chains" (handicaps). Learn how they work!

KeyForge Houses Overview

Each KeyForge set features different houses with unique playstyles. Here are some common ones:

  • Brobnar: Aggressive fighters who excel at combat
  • Dis: Chaos and disruption, stealing and destroying Æmber
  • Logos: Card draw and archive effects for long-term strategy
  • Mars: Æmber generation and creature swarm tactics
  • Sanctum: Healing, armor, and protection
